The Furies In Mythology

A Quick Intro
The Furies were known in Greek mythology as being three sisters. They were also considered to be Goddesses of Punishment. These three sisters were known to be merciless and they carried whips and spikes on them to punish people. They'd spit and smelled like rotten blood and had burning eyes.They'd put a spell on those who'd kill children to either make them go mad or die of persecution.
Their Names
Also known as the three goddesses of Vengeance their names were Tisiphone, Megaera, and Alecto. Tisiphone was the avenger of murder. Megaera was the the avenger of jealousy. Alecto the avenger of constant anger. Another name for these sisters besides Furies is Erinyes.
How They Looked
These three sisters weren't easy on the eyes, not so much like the television show Charmed has let them on to be. They had snake for hair, similar to the Gorgon and blood would drip form their eyes.
How They Were Created
The Titan Cronus had castrated his father Uranus and threw his privates in the sea. In the mythology it is said that The Furies formed from the drops of blood.
Guardians Of The Law
These sisters were known as the guardians of the law at times when they found themselves having to intervene when the state had not done any thing in a certain matter. Then they'd take care of it. They would look after beggars and strangers, even protect dogs as well any animal.
Altogether I am most grateful of today's media for bringing them into the show and allowing people to be more aware of them as well as other mythological beings but still, I would wish they would depict them as they should be depicted.

Maybe that is so stessily about their appearances somewhat shifting their perception. That is something I myself haven't heard but would make sense.

Very cool hub. I loved Charmed and had no idea they were representations of the Furies. Are furies the same as the Fates? I seem to remember they were three sisters as well.
Back when I was in 4th grade, we studied Greek Mythology for about 2-3 weeks. I still remember clearly, what I felt when I started reading the books. I thought, Finally, I'm learning something real.

Tk, I love mythology of all types, including Egyptian. Now as for your question of them being the same as the fates they are not. The fates are sister like beings that weave a pattern for us, a pattern known as our fate. In mythology they could choose to cut a string and this could cause things to go insane or end our lives. Thanks for the great hubs. From what I've read, I think they had lizards, not snakes for hair to distinguish them from the gorgons. However, these myths are often very ambiguous, since they vary from author to author.
You're welcome Steve. In some myths they do state lizards for hair others state snakes. You are right to state that they do vary from author to author.
Well, we can split the difference and make them legless lizards! Keep writing. I just love reading and writing about this stuff, especially the myth of Prometheus. One of my favorite stories is Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus.

Crescentmoon2007: When I was reading everything I could on Greek mythology, I was absolutely fascinated by the Furies. Their true appearance somewhat shifts the perception of them. Their righteous missions may be easier to accept in the lovely guises but I think that it would indeed be more interesting to cast them properly in their horrific forms.
