Cyclopes In Greek Mythology
72
Introduction
The Cyclopes, for that it the plural word used for a cyclops, were giants but a different kind of race in the field of giants. In Greek mythology they were said to resemble humans but being huge in size and having a single eye in the middle of their foreheads.
These Cyclopes in my point of view are both bad as well as good and by reading this hub you'll probably see why in some ways I find them to be good yet in other ways I find them to be frightening and down right mean.
Different Cyclopes Mentioned
Within Greek Mythology the cyclopes are mentioned a couple of times. There is the well known one mentioned quite a few times in media that goes by the name of Polyphemus. This Cyclopes was said to be the son of Poseidon and Thoosa. It is Polyphemus that brings out the bad side of the cyclopes. For in the story of Odysseus when he landed on the Island of cyclops they discovered the cave of Polyphemus. There Polyphemus trapped them, eating Odysseus' men one by one leaving him for last. The men held no challenge or even a chance against Polyphemus until he reached Odysseus who fought him eventually blinding him in the end. Now you may understand why I find the idea of the cyclopes race frightening.
Then there is the story of the three cyclopes who were the sons of Uranus and Gaea. They were called Arges the bright, Brontes the thunderer, and Steropes the lightener. These three cyclopes were imprisoned by the Cronus in Tartarus. Eventually Zeus freed them and by doing so the cyclopes gave Zeus his lightening bold, Poseidon his powerful trident, and Hades his helmet of invisibility. They came to the aid of the gods and goddesses in defeating the Titans. Now with this story I find them to be good.
What Happend To Them?
We know that Polyphemus was blinded by Odysseus but what about the three brothers? This much is known that in Greek mythology the God Hermes had killed Arges and the God Apollo had killed at least one of them himself. Apollo did so out of anger when he discovered Zeus had killed one of his sons.
For many years the Cyclopes have been in media. They are mentioned in the television show that once aired that was called Xena: Warrior Princess. And also in the Hercules show that was also once aired. But recently one is brought up in the book series of Percy Jackson. I figured that now is the time more than ever to speak of the Cyclopes. For others can learn their story, their amazing and forever interesting story that I believe will never fade as years go by.

Cool hub! One more mention of a cyclops...did you see the film "O Brother Where Art Thou"? John Goodman plays a one-eyed Ku Klux Klan member, who is an allusion to the cyclops of Homer! Voted up and interesting!
